Skin laxity – causes, prevention and reversal

Skin laxity has become a growing concern within the beauty and age conscious community. Skin laxity is also something absolutely everyone with no exception will face at some point in their life. Due to the natural ageing process we begin to lose collagen and elastin. These are the two key components that keep our youthful appearance. Besides aging, there are other factors that can contribute to skin laxity, such as genetics, diet, lifestyle, sun exposure and stress among others.  With time our skin begins to lose elasticity, resulting in loose or sagging skin.

Following a healthy diet, having a workout regimen and using age-appropriate skin-care are all key factors in keeping ourselves heathy and slowing down the ageing process but are not enough when it comes to targeting laxity in the skin. There are two vital components to the skin’s structure that will affect laxity, these are as mentioned above collagen and elastin.

What is collagen?

Collagen is the main structural protein found in the skin and other connective tissues throughout the body. Think of collagen as the “building blocks” of the skin.

What is elastin?

Elastin is a protein that coils and recoils like a spring within the elastic fibers of connective tissue, accounting for the elasticity of the skin and other structures of the body.

The skin depends on both collagen and elastin to remain tight in our face and body. Collagen and elastin are found in the deeper layer of the skin called the dermis, which is located right above the fatty layer which lies beneath the skin.

Age related changes occur gradually and often invisible to the naked eye, until we reach the point of the inevitable occurrence of static lines, and depletion of our collagen and elastin levels resulting in saggy and lax skin.

What happens to our skin with age?

  • Reduction in collagen fibres: saggy skin and early jowl development
  • Reduction in fibroblast activity: Fine lines and wrinkles become more prominent
  • Reduced skin metabolism: tired and dull skin surface

What skin care products help skin laxity?

Our skin care routine and the products we use play a huge role in overall skin quality and health. Our skin needs to be fed with essential nutrients as much as our body does on a daily basis.

At Aestha Clinic, we carry all medical grade skin care products, meaning the concentration of active ingredients are higher than most drug store or over the counter products. Medical grade skin care products include growth factors, antioxidants, vitamins, peptides and other essential ingredients. If you are concerned with skin laxity, growth factors are a must as they inhibit collagen production in the skin. Combining growth factors with the other essential ingredients will greatly benefit your skin!
