ELASTIN is a key protein in our skin’s dermal extra cellular matrix (ECM), which ensures skin bounciness, tone, and elasticity. With age, affected by extrinsic and intrinsic aging factors elastin decreases by 10 % every decade starting in our 20’s.
The most well-known elastin deficiency is skin elastosis caused by UV radiation, smoking and aging. Clinically, aged skin is characterized by a loss of hydration, rough texture, irregular pigmentation, yellowish colour, broken blood vessels, skin wrinkling, dermal thinning and fine lines. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) ie oxidative distress active radicals due to metabolic waste accumulated in the skin cells in much higher concentrations affects our skin cell DNA molecules causing premature aging, collagen and elastin degradation.
How to recognise the loss of skin elasticity?
- Epidermal aging is easiest to notice due to epidermal thinning, pigmentation, and unevenness or ‘age spots’.
- Dermal aging results in skin thinning due to decreased fibroblast activity reduced collagen synthesis and increased UV radiation elastin breakdown. Skin extra cellular matrix containing collagen, hyaluronic acid, and elastin is destroyed resulting in skin sagginess, wrinkling, cellulite, and dull texture.
- Metabolic skin repair processes slow down with age and accumulated extrinsic cell damage ie metabolic waste, oxidative distress, tired and senile cells. Skin cell repair and energy metabolic processes are reduced. Cells are unable to repair as quickly, and their intake of nutrition is reduced due to decreased blood vessel network and oxygen availability.
