11 Effective Under-Eye Wrinkle Treatments

No one wants to look like they’ve had a bad night’s sleep – or like they’re older than they really are. But that’s exactly what can happen when you have dark circles and puffy bags under your eyes. In fact, these under-eye bags can make you look years older and distort the appearance of your face.

If you’re not happy with the skin under your eyes, there are plenty of treatments that can help. Depending on the specific concern and other factors such as age, skin type and lifestyle we can work on developing a treatment protocol designed to target and diminish anything from under-eye bags to pigmentation and skin laxity. These include laser resurfacing, bio-regenerative treatments, plasmotherapy, muscle relaxants and more that we are about to discuss in this article. All of these treatments are developed to improve skin tone, tighten the skin and rejuvenate the under-eye area, helping you achieve your desired outcome and give you a refreshed and youthful look.

Dynamic lines can occur in early 20’s and gradually develop further due to the natural movement of our face when smiling. The line appearance depends on many factors:

  • Skin elasticity and thickness
  • Volume loss
  • Skin health
  • Expression of overall face

Effective under-eye wrinkle treatments:

Skin assessment to evaluate skin’s firmness and elasticity is important to ensure that treatment plan is effective and gives the expected short- and long-term results.

1. Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a treatment, which uses solution with active ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hyaluronic acid to improve skin health and elasticity in your under-eye area.

2. Plasmotehrapy – PRP and Plasma Gel or BIOFILLER

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is your own concentrated version of growth factors that activate stem cells to renew and produce more active components such as hyaluronic acid and collagen.

PRP can be heated and formed into light filler solution (Biofiller LINK to article), which works slightly different as it takes longer to get absorbed by the body, hence:

1) effects last longer ;

2) constant stimulation adds a slight volume;

3) treats dark circles and pigment accumulation

3. Exosomes

The newest and most popular stem cell stimulation treatment which is proven to reduce skin pigmentation, improve elasticity and reverse the skin ageing process. Combined with PRP it forms a potent solution that enhances the effect and results.

4. Lumi Eyes or Polynucleotides

This is one of the most popular treatments to improve skin health and repair skin DNA. Polynucleotides are amino acid parts, that are essential to our DNA’s integrity which gets damaged by lifestyle stressors such as pollution or hormones. Skin ultimately becomes weaker and less resistant to any further challenges, lines and laxity are first signs of decreased skin barrier function and internal damage. Polynucleotides are excellent in repairing it, however, you may require few sessions

5. Botox

Botulinum toxin is a muscle relaxant that is exceptionally effective for treating dynamic lines. It helps reduce dynamic lines and gives a youthful and relaxed look.

Another variation of a Botox treatment is the so called MICROTOX. This is where a more diluted solution is superficially injected in different areas. It is a brilliant treatment for superficial dynamic line reduction, puffiness and even dark circles as it helps reduce micro-vessels stress.Relaxed vessels release less hemosiderin which often discolours the under-eye area.

6. Tear Trough Fillers

Hollowed areas called tear troughs develop under the eyes due to a variety of factors or simply the anatomy of the face. Tear troughs cause shadows that increase the appearance of puffy eyes. In cases of advanced volume loss, you may require hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to improve tear trough area and reduce shadowing due to volume loss.

7. Polylactic acid

It is not common for polylactic acid to be used for the under-eye area. However experienced clinicians are able to improve dark circles under eyes which are not responsive to hyaluronic acid and require extra help to build skin thickness and collagen.

8. RF microneedling

RF microneedling primarily works on generating collagen and building skin elastin and collagen levels, hence tightening and improving skin’s elasticity. Especially useful for mid 30s and above to prevent ageing signs.

9. Ultraformer III

High frequency USS devices are best applied for bulging fat pads, heavy eyebrows and lymph accumulation. The treatment can be combined with PRP injectables to achieve an inside out regenerative effect and prevent ageing.

10. Non-ablative lasers

Non-ablative lasers such as ND: YAG, DYE: VL perform two functions – target colour (blue, purple and brown) as well as generate collagen. They can be especially helpful if you have dark circles, visible veins, pigmentation as well as skin’s elasticity and thinning.

11. Ablative lasers

CO2 or Erbium lasers are excellent in addressing skin ageing signs and improving skin thickness, however, they can be aggressive procedures requiring experienced clinician and precautions to manage post inflammatory pigmentation.

Erbium lasers are usually suitable for all skin types; however, CO2 is the preferred device for darker skin types.
